a perforated, flesh-colored rigid plastic splint (commonly known as a Stax splint or stack splint) fitted onto the middle finger. It encapsulates the fingertip and is secured with a beige strap around the middle phalanx. The design features small ventilation holes and holds the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint (the joint closest to the fingernail) in a fully straight, extended position while leaving the lower knuckle free to bend. General Indications & Purpose This style of hard plastic splint is primarily used to manage conditions affecting the tip of the finger: 1. Mallet Finger (Extensor Tendon Rupture or Avulsion Fracture): This is the most common use. It occurs when a forceful impact (like a sports ball jamming the finger) tears the extensor tendon or pulls off a small piece of bone, causing the fingertip to droop down. The splint holds the joint strictly straight so the tendon can grow back together. 2. Fingertip and Nail Bed Injuries: The rigid outer shell acts as a protective shield for crushed or lacerated fingertips, protecting the healing skin, tissue, or nail bed from accidental bumps. 3. Distal Phalanx Fractures: It provides necessary immobilization to help small, stable fractures of the tip bone heal correctly.
